Elephant Tower on Phaholyothin Road

Most towns and cities in Thailand have few buildings of architectural merit or interest, apart from temples if that is your sort of thing. However, Bangkok literally stands out from the others in having a huge number of interesting commercial and residential skyscraper buildings that offer fantastic photo opportunities. Some of the best areas include Sathorn and new developments around Sukhumvit Road. Even outside of these areas, there are many great structures to be found including the locally famous Elephant Tower on Phaholyothin Road, close to the intersection with Ratchadapisek Road.

The Elephant Tower (ตึกช้าง) pronounced in Thai as dtèuk cháang, has three main towers bridged at the top. With some imagination these towers take on the appearance of the fore and rear legs of an elephant, with the third tower representing the trunk. This appearance is further enhanced by architectural features that represent the ears, eyes, and tusks of the elephant.

As previously mentioned, the Elephant Building is split into three towers and has seven distinct zones, namely:

  1. Tower A (commercial offices)
  2. Tower B (commercial offices)
  3. Tower C (residential suites)
  4. Top Floor (luxurious residential suites)
  5. Recreation Zone (sports, swimming pool, and gardens)
  6. Retail zone (shopping, bank, and post office)
  7. Car parking
