People's Channel (red shirt television) blacked out

People's Channel has been blacked out

The satellite TV People's Channel has been blacked out.

The channel went on and off for a while before it was completely blacked out.

Earlier, the broadcast from ThaiCom star was inaccessible while that from NSS6 could be until at about 11:10 am.

Earlier the day, Deputy PM's Secretary-General Panitharn Wattanayakorn said the government might seize broadcast equipment of the station instead of blocking its transmission from satellites.

Experts said the government had no authority to block the transmission from NSS6, which is not owned by Thais.

Authorities shut down 'red shirt' protesters' TV channel

Thai authorities have shut down a TV channel of red shirted anti-government protesters as part of their efforts to restore order in the capital, a minister said. Rallies to topple the government are ongoing.

AFP - Thai authorities pulled the plug on the television channel of red shirted anti-government protesters Thursday, prompting an angry response from the demonstrators.

"We have successfully shut down the People's Channel (P-TV)," Satit Wonghnongtaey, minister attached to the premier's office, told AFP.

He said the station had been taken off air for inciting unrest.

The satellite TV channel's rolling coverage of the red shirt rallies was abruptly halted, leaving a blank screen.

The protesters, who have refused to end a mass rally in the capital despite a state of emergency, railed against the government's move.

"It is an evil measure by a dictator government," said Reds leader Nattawut Saikuar from the rally stage.

"The government wrongly thinks that cutting the signal will stop Reds from gathering. We give final word to the government to connect our signal within today, otherwise people will fight for their rights."

The Reds have promised another big gathering on Friday, extending more than three weeks of rolling rallies that attracted 100,000 people at their peak.

Government action fuels further distrust

Thai authorities have shut down a TV channel of red shirted anti-government protesters as part of their efforts to restore order in the capital, a minister said.

It’s easy to understand why the government might want to take further control of popular media in Thailand, especially when it has proved to be such a thorn in its side. However, I do not understand how taking such action can possible lead towards reconciliation and peace in Thailand as it is only likely to fuel further distrust of the government.
