Mahakan Fort (close to Phan Fa Lilat Bridge)

Mahakan Fort (ป้อมมหากาฬ) is an octagonal shaped fort in Bangkok that overlooks the nearby Phan Fa Lilat Bridge. In 1949, the fort was registered by the Thai Fine Arts Department as a National Ancient Monument. Mahakan Fort measures 38 meters wide and reaches a maximum height of 35 meters. It is constructed of bricks covered with a cement based render, and with six canons it takes on the appearance of a heavily fortified site.

Despite having some potential (albeit somewhat limited) as a tourist attraction, visitors are generally not permitted to scale the fort. The following photos were taken during the pro-democracy red shirt rally on Ratchadamnoen Avenue in March 2010.
