Benjasiri Park

Benjasiri Park (Thai: อุทยานเบญจสิริ) sometimes written as Benchasiri Park, is a public park located between Sukhumvit Soi 22 and 24, next to the Emporium Shopping Complex. There are two main access gates from Sukhumvit Road and a smaller gate to one side of the park for residents and guests of the Queen's Park Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 22.

The park was built on 29 rai (4.64 hectares) of land previously occupied by the Meteorological Department. Due to its location on a very popular stretch of Sukhumvit Road, the park attracts many Thai and foreign visitors. The main feature of the park is a large central lake surrounded by well-maintained gardens. There are also many interesting and sometimes obscure looking sculptures.

The wide access road that surrounds the park is mostly used by runners in the early morning and evening.

Other areas within the park are popular venues for group aerobics classes and traditional Chinese dance. The park also has dedicated areas for volleyball, takraw (a Thai game similar to volleyball, but players are allowed to use their feet, thighs and head), basketball and skateboarding. Additionally, there are two play areas for young children and the footpaths are motorcycle-free and safe to walk on.

Although hot during the daytime, the park is a pleasant and safe place to visit during the morning and evening. Many young couples visit the park, seeking a quiet retreat on the grassy areas surrounding the lake.

Located at the rear of the park is an open-air swimming pool. To use the facilities, you must first become a member. To join, you'll need a doctor's medical certificate (these are easily obtained from most clinics for about 50 - 200 baht) and two ID photos. The joining fee is very low - we don't remember the exact price, but it was something like 40 baht when we joined - and the fee per visit is similarly low, too. Don't forget to take your own small padlock to secure your clothes and valuables in one of the changing room lockers.

The front paved area inside the park is often used for commercial events and free concerts. It is also used as a ballot site for government elections.

At the very front of the park is an ornamental pond which features a fountain display from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM, midday to 1:00 PM, and 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Benjasiri Park opens every day from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Admission to the park is free.
