Democrat Party in crisis, Abhisit faces ban from Thai politics

The Democrat Party and its executives are facing a renewed crisis as prosecutors push to dissolve the party and ban its executives who held positions in 2004 and 2005.

Deputy Attorney-General Waiyawut Lortrakul said yesterday that prosecutors had finished drafting the recommendation and sent a 100-page document to the Attorney-General for approval. If no changes are suggested, the recommendation will be presented to the Constitution Court today.

Mr Waiyawut said it is alleged the Democrats received donations worth 258 million baht from TPI Polene Plc (บริษัท ทีพีไอ โพลีน จำกัด, มหาชน), founded by businessman-turned-politician Prachai Leophairatana in 2005. The donations were allegedly made through disguised transactions which could be in violation of the 2007 Political Party Act.

In addition to dissolving the Democrat Party, the prosecutors will recommend that the court ban about 40 party executives including Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva from politics for five years.
