Chalerm launches broadside against 3 Cabinet members

Veteran politician Chalerm Yoobamrung grilled three Cabinet members during yesterday's House censure debate.
He assailed Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul for alleged abuse of authority, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya for alleged contempt of the monarchy, and Transport Minister Sophon Saram for alleged irregularity in the Purple Line project.
Chalerm, chief MP of the opposition Pheu Thai Party, accused the interior minister of abusing power by inappropriately allowing 93 new gun shops to be opened, after a 27-year hiatus. He said the move came after Chaovarat cancelled a quota system that allowed Interior Ministry officials to buy guns at subsidised prices.
Chalerm alleged that unnamed people close to the interior minister had pocketed Bt4.5 million for each of the new gun shops.
The opposition politician also cast aspersion over 17 residents of Buri Ram passing a recent examination for enrolment in the main district school. "Why are there so many clever people in that province?" he asked. Chalerm, who swore he was not lying, suggested there was a paper leak in the exam.
The northeastern province of Buri Ram is the stronghold of the coalition Bhum Jai Thai Party, which is led by Chaovarat.
Chalerm also said he had heard certain candidates for provincial governors had to pay between Bt8 million and Bt15 million to get the job while directors-general of certain departments in the Interior Ministry had to pay between Bt200 million and Bt500 million each.

Chalerm accuses Bhum Jai Thai ministers of irregularities in projects
Two key Cabinet members from the coalition Bhum Jai Thai Party yesterday became major targets in the opposition's censure of the government, with the focus on mega-projects and chiefly the Bangkok subway's Purple Line.
During the second day of the censure debate, Chalerm Yoobamrung, head MP of the opposition Pheu Thai Party, accused Transport Minister Sophon Saram and Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul of conspiring with other Cabinet members to "steal billions of baht in public assets for businesses owned by their cronies".
He said the projects benefited construction companies such as Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction, which is majority-owned by Chaovarat's family.
