Princeton University WordNet

WordNet®is a large lexical database of English language maintained at the Cognitive Science Laboratory of Princeton University. The database groups nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs into sets of synonyms (synsets) each of which express a distinct concept.

Semantic and lexical relations are established between synsets to create a network of meaningfully related words and ideas that can be followed using the browser tool. The WordNet database and a browser for Microsoft Windows and Linux are available for free download.

Although it may be used as a dictionary and thesaurus, WordNet does not include all parts of speech (e.g. pronouns are not included) and may be more suited for advanced users of English and lexicographers. The database may also be used for machine translation of natural languages.
