The Ancient City ("Muang Boran") in Samut Prakan near Bangkok

The Ancient City (Thai: เมืองโบราณ) is a historical park located in Samut Prakan province, close to Bangkok. Despite having a dual pricing policy for foreigners, it remains excellent value as a full (or half) day out and a fantastic place to visit. The Ancient City comes highly recommended by us.

The Ancient City is one of the more enlightened places with a dual pricing policy. Foreigners with a work permit (and presumably their families - although we did not ask) may enter for the Thai price. This policy is advertised in the visitor center.

The Ancient City spans a large area, and by far the best way to enjoy your day there is to hire a bicycle. Fortunately, there are very few cars there and no motorcycles, making cycling a pleasant and experience. Don't forget to check your bicycle carefully before taking it any distance from the hire center as many of them have faulty brakes or problems with the wheels and chainsets. This is typical of most bicycle hire centers in Thailand.

We have visited the Ancient City many times, and plan to make a new visit and post a full review with pictures in the next few weeks. If you have something to add to the review or comment on, please let us know.

Muang Boran publishing house

Also started by the entrepreneur Khun Lek is the Muang Buran publishing house, which has several very good books on Thai history and art, including a few in English. There's also the Muang Boran Journal, also sadly mostly in Thai only. And if I'm not mistaken, the publishing house has a shop directly a Democracy Monument, though I have only seen it from car and never went inside yet.

Muang Boran Journal

Thanks for posting that link to the Muang Boran Journal. I see that it has been referenced at least once on your website http://tambon.blogspot.com/2009/12/etymology-of-district-name-hot.html

If we get a chance, we'll have to visit that shop you mentioned.

One of these days...

I plan on going to the Ancient City this weekend to take advantage of the weather while it's still not as hot as it's going to get. And... to try out my new camera. Wish me luck.

If you hire a bike to ride

If you hire a bike to ride around the park you'll get a nice cooling breeze, but don't forget to take a sunhat and sunblock! I look forward to seeing the photos.
