Thai Typing tutor + chat online
When I first moved to Thailand, I was often told that, "Learning to read and write in Thai is too difficult." So, for the first year or so I made no attempt at typing (or even writing) in Thai, opting to transliterate everything I heard into English with my own unique system of marks to denote tones and vowel lengths -- yes, we've all made that mistake. Fortunately, I realized the weakness of the system and taught myself to read and write in Thai. It's honestly not that difficult and this free typing tutor is a great way to practice typing in Thai script. Another way that I found incredibly useful to improve my language skills and typing ability was to chat online in Thai. Give it a go -- it may not be as difficult as you think!

I agree, and think that
I agree, and think that learning to type and learning the class, tone marks, etc. frees the mind to truly learn the language.
However, I have had much trouble with Thai-tying tutor 1.04 and have learned some about how to use it.
Using WindowsXP one must add thai to the language bar, and then switch to thai, otherwise the program won't work.
Doing this it "mostly" works, but gets "hung up" on certain letters like "~" which hangs the program and I can't get past it.
I suggest that you download the file into a separate folder, check for viruses, and then let it install into the Windows file because, for some reason, when this program hangs, occasionally I need to re-install it. If I don't put it in a separate folder, the .exe file in the Windows/typingtutor file disappears... Seems odd, but it's the only typing tutor around for thai that I know of.
Hi Steve, Glad to hear that
Hi Steve,
Glad to hear that you've found Thai-typing Tutor 1.04 useful. You're quite right - it's necessary to add Thai language support to Windows XP to enable this program to work. That's not an error, rather it installs the necessary keyboard layout for the program to work.
I'm not sure about your problem with the tilde ("~") character, as that's not part of the Thai alphabet. Were you referring to the use of the back tick ("`") character commonly used by Thai people to change the keyboard layout from Thai to English (and vice-versa)? On a standard keyboard layout that's at the top left hand side of the keyboard, just below the F1 key. I much prefer to use the Alt+Shift keyboard combination to change keyboard layouts as I sometimes use the back tick character when writing computer code.
Scanning files for viruses is always a good idea, especially when software is downloaded from the Internet; however, I should point out that this software was scanned and virus free when we uploaded it to the Bangkok Library web server.
You mentioned installing the program into the "Windows file" by which I assume you mean install the program into c:\windows folder. This is probably not a good idea, as it would be better installed in its own folder, such as c:\program files\typing_tutor or something like that. If any files disappear without explanation then I suggest you check the health of your computer system and do a complete virus scan as it sounds like your installation may have a problem.
