Siam Commercial Bank (Thai: ธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์) was established by Royal Charter in 1907, making it the oldest local bank in Thailand. Its name in Thai is pronounced tá-naa-kaan tai paa-nít.
Reuters are reporting that Thailand's top four banks are to close all branches in the capital at 13.00 on Wednesday May 19, 2010:
No announcement has been made as to when the banks will reopen.
The Thai Bank Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์ธนาคารไทย) is located at the SCB Park Plaza on Ratchadapisek Road. Managed by Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) – the oldest bank in Thailand – the museum houses a collection of documents and materials that recount the evolution of Thailand's financial and banking system.
The ground floor includes a comfortable reception area, computer terminals, and a large exhibition space which was being used as an art gallery when we last visited (April 7, 2010). Most information boards and notices are written in Thai and English. The museum is attractively presented throughout and for anyone interested in money or banking this museum is worth at least a short visit.
The SCB Learning Center is located at the SCB Park Plaza on Ratchadapisek Road. The center includes a small library open to the public, and training facilities for SCB employees. The library (ห้องสมุดธนาคารไทยพาณิชย์) has a good selection of textbooks, journals, newspapers, annual reports, and CD ROMs. Publications are available in Thai and English, but most are available in Thai only.
Bank of Thailand Museum (Thai: พิพิธภัณฑ์ ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย, or ธปท.) pronounced pí-pít-tá-pan tá-naa-kaan bprà-tâyt tai, is located within the Main Mansion of the Bang Khunphrom Palace and the Main Mansion of the Thevaves Palace – now the complex of the Bank of Thailand. It should not be confused with the Thai Bank Museum operated by Siam Commercial Bank.
