No more 90 day notifications at Chamchuri Square

IMPORTANT!

Ninety day notifications at the BOI One-Stop Service Center for Visas and Work Permits at Chamchuri Square (MRT Sam Yan) are no longer being processed for those who did not obtain their visa or visa extension at that office. This follows a meeting of immigration officials at Monday lunchtime on March 8, 2010.

Customers who were already queuing with completed forms were turned away and told to go to the Immigration Center at Chaeng Wattana.

Rim Khob Fa Bookstore (next to Democracy Monument)

Rim Khob Fa Bookstore (Thai: ร้านหนังสือริมขอบฟ้า) pronounced ráan năng-sĕu rim kòp fáa, is very easy to find being located next to Democracy Monument on Ratchadamoen Klang Avenue. Half of the store contains books on mostly academic subjects (languages, fine arts, history, etc.), but there is also a selection of travel and general interest books. The other half of the store is set aside for miscellaneous activities.

Bangkok International Book Fair 2010 (March 26 - April 6)

Bangkok International Book Fair 2010 (BIBF) is scheduled for March 26 to April 6 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. The 2009 BIBF had a total of 427 companies exhibiting in 869 booths and attracted about 1.5 million visitors. Discounts and promotions were available at many booths and we expect the same for this year.

Download LEXiTRON 2.6 Bilingual Thai - English dictionary

LEXiTRON ™ (เล็กซิตรอน) is a Thai <-> English dictionary produced by the National Computer and Electronics Center, Thailand (NECTEC). There are two versions of the dictionary (sound / no sound) that you can download and install for free.

LEXiTRON is maintained by Thai staff and its users can suggest new words and definitions. This may explain how some of the more unusual words, spellings and sometimes vulgar slang has worked its way into the dictionary. Nonetheless, for a free dictionary the overall quality is quite reasonable.

Page One (bookstore chain) is coming to Thailand

in

Admittedly this news comes a little bit late, but for anyone who missed it first time around Central Retail Corporation (CRC) has already started opening new branches of the foreign bookstore chain Page One, with several more branches planned for 2010. It's not clear if these stores will replace or augment poorly performing branches of B2S Bookstore, but at least one branch has been opened "at" B2S Central Chidlom.

With target markets including white-collar workers, children, families and people fond of arts, fashion and architecture (read: "pulp fiction, comic and picture books") there seems to be little chance of this store impacting on the dominant market positions held by Asia Books and the generally superior Kinokuniya. Let's just hope it's not at bad as Book Lounge @ Amarin.
